CIEEM Training and Events 2020

These beginners/intermediate courses are open to CIEEM members and non-members and are suitable for anyone wishing to gain confidence in:

 

  • Plant identification skills and using botanical keys

  • Extended Phase 1/Phase 2 using the National Classification System

  • The importance of meres and mosses (with emphasis on Sphagnum moss species)

  • Soils, Plants and Phytoremediation

Suitable for land managers, local authority ecologists and planners, conservation officers and licensing staff within SNCOs or NGO’s, students, ecological consultants, environmental managers, wardens, rangers or conservation volunteers who need to gain botanical ID skills in order to conduct surveys and record species for conservation charities.

Plant Identification & Botanical Keys

This two day course will give participants the confidence to identify a wide range of common plant species using plant components, such as stem, leaf, bract, inflorescence, roots/bulbils, reproductive organs and hairs as identifying features. Training will also cover using botanical keys to identify plants. We will also be looking at the naming rules and hierarchical structure of plants, sub-species and hybrids (taxonomy). Participants will have the chance to get 'hands on' using specimen plants  from a garden centre specified by the trainer.

Vegetation Survey Techniques- Phase 2 Using NVC

This two day course will help participants understand how to conduct a vegetation survey using Phase 2 habitat survey techniques (also referred to as Extended Phase 1) and the National Vegetation Classification system. Participants will also learn about floristic composition and the different methods for recording species abundance and biodiversity.

This two day course will help participants understand the environmental importance of meres and mosses, with particular emphasis on Sphagnum moss bogs. Participants will learn to identify and recognise different types of peatland and bog habitat. We will look at case studies of existing and historical wetland projects and different management techniques

Soils, Plants and Phytoremediation

This two day course will help participants recognise the remedial actions that can be taken to resolve or reduce the effects of human impacts on biodiversity, such as recreational pressure or pollution. We will also look at habitat indicator plant species and the habitats in which they grow and cover the importance of understanding the laws surrounding protected species and invasive plants.

Sea Watch Foundation Events 2020

 

The Sea Watch Foundation National Whale and Dolphin Week runs from 25th July 2020 to 2nd August 2020. Join us for online training via Zoom on Wednesday 22nd and Friday 24th July.

 

 

We also give illustrated talks and lectures in and around Cheshire, Shropshire and North Wales on a variety of subjects ranging from environmental, ecological, ornithological, botanical, ponds and tracking. Please contact us to book us for  an illustrated talk for your group.
